While the idea of driving in foreign countries during your trips can be daunting, nerve racking and disorienting for most of us due to different traffic rules and driving side on the road (and driver side in the car), for some adventurous souls, it can be the preferred way to explore new places and locations especially if you want to travel at your own pace with your family or close friends. We are going to share some information and guide

License Requirements for Driving Overseas

Every country have their own rules and requirement for non-citizen to drive on their road. Here are two basic requirements for the driver:

  1. A valid Competent Driving License (CDL) in your home country for at least 12 months. A physical copy of driving license is a must. The digital version in your myJPJ app is not sufficient as it is not a recognised form of CDL outside Malaysia.
  2. An International Driving Permit (IDP) issued by authorised bodies as allowed by the road authority of the destination country. For Malaysia, the sole authorised body that can issue all IDP to all countries is Jabatan Pengangkutan Jalan (JPJ).

There are some exceptions for rule no 2 in certain countries. You may not be required to obtain an IDP if your CDL already has English translation in the license. For example, a Malaysian travelling to New Zealand does not require an IDP if you enter the country for a short trip. To check for latest rules for respective countries, it is best to visit their road authority website to get the most accurate information in advance to better arrange your documentations ahead of time.

Once you get those requirements fulfilled and checked from your travel checklist, it is time to find the car to rent and plan your route.

When to book?

Your best bet is to book ahead if you want a good deal, particularly if you want to travel to popular destinations. Six months in advance seems to be the sweet spot for the best rates. Many car rental companies offer free cancellation, so if your plans change you can always cancel down the road, without paying a fee. Just make sure to read the fine print.

Where to rent?

Big international car rental companies might have the fleet in many different countries. If your travel route includes cross border journeys and your end point is different than your starting point, they are your best bets. Our recommended providers are Hertz and Europcar for such trips. If you want to pick up the car at the airport upon arrival, find an operator which listed pick up and drop off point at your arrival and departure airport.

How much is the rental rate?

The rate is calculated based on daily rate. They usually include different insurance premium and coverage so pick one that suits your needs. The minimum age for registered drivers is normally 21 years old for most car rental companies. For registered drivers below the age of 25, there are surcharges imposed on the insurance premium. Travelling off-season might get you a better rate due to lower demand.

What other costs are involved?

Take into account the cost for tolls, petrol, border fees, congestion tax in some cities, parking fees. Include these items when you are planning the budget for your trip.
