France

The country that invented the idea of the good life — and keeps proving it

France is the most visited country in the world, and it holds that position for reasons that have less to do with marketing than with the genuine variety it offers within a single national border. Paris is the obvious anchor — a capital of museums, food, architecture, and a particular quality of light that photographers have been chasing for two centuries. But France beyond Paris is where the country's real range becomes clear: the Loire Valley's Renaissance châteaux strung along a river; the ochre hill villages of Provence; Bordeaux and Burgundy and Champagne, three wine regions that between them have shaped how the world thinks about what wine can be; the Atlantic coast of the Basque Country, where the food has as strong a case as anywhere in Europe; and Alsace in the far northeast, where the architecture looks German and the food splits the difference.

France has a significant Muslim population — the largest in Western Europe — and halal food is correspondingly well-distributed across the country. Paris in particular has excellent halal options across all price points, concentrated in the 18th and 19th arrondissements but increasingly available throughout the city. Lyon, Marseille, and Strasbourg all have well-established halal restaurant scenes. In smaller towns and rural areas options become limited, but the major tourist destinations are reliably covered. The country's transport infrastructure is among the best in Europe: the TGV high-speed rail network connects Paris to most major cities in under three hours, and domestic flights fill the gaps the trains don't reach.

A first trip to France typically means Paris, and that's a reasonable starting point — the city earns a week on its own. Return visitors tend to push into the regions, where the country is quieter, slower, and often more rewarding. France also works as a hub for broader Europe travel: the Eurostar connects Paris to London in two hours 15 minutes; the TGV runs to Barcelona in six hours and Brussels in one hour 22. For travellers who want depth over breadth, France is a destination that gives back in proportion to the time invested.
