Scotland

Castles, lochs, islands and Highland roads — a country whose compact cities open into some of Britain’s most dramatic and lightly populated landscapes.

Scotland occupies the northern third of Great Britain and extends across more than 790 islands, from the Inner and Outer Hebrides in the Atlantic to Orkney and Shetland in the north. Its landscape changes quickly: the gentler farmland and historic towns of the Lowlands give way to glens, lochs and mountain ranges across the Highlands. Edinburgh and Glasgow provide contrasting urban introductions — one defined by its medieval and Georgian setting, the other by industrial heritage and contemporary culture — before railways and roads lead into increasingly open country.

Many journeys focus on the Highlands and western islands. Loch Lomond marks the transition from the Central Belt into mountain scenery, while Glencoe, Fort William and the Great Glen form a natural route toward Loch Ness and Inverness. The Isle of Skye combines sea cliffs, volcanic ridges and crofting communities, while Mull, Islay, Harris and Lewis each offer a distinct landscape and cultural identity. Farther north, the North Coast 500 traces a spectacular but increasingly busy road circuit. Castles, prehistoric sites and battlefields appear throughout the country, connecting the landscape to clan history, royal conflict and centuries of migration.

Scotland is well suited to rail-and-road itineraries, but remote areas require realistic travel times and advance planning for accommodation, ferries and meals. Muslim travellers will find the widest range of mosques and halal food in Glasgow and Edinburgh, with useful options in Aberdeen and Dundee; provision becomes limited in the Highlands and islands, where seafood, vegetarian meals and self-catering are practical. May and June often provide long daylight and relatively stable conditions before peak summer crowds. July and August are busiest and coincide with the midge season in western and Highland areas, while autumn brings colour and quieter roads.
