How to apply for an Australia ETA — a guide for Malaysians

The subclass 601 ETA is quick and inexpensive, but there are a few things worth knowing before you start the application.

How to apply for an Australia ETA — a guide for Malaysians

If you hold a Malaysian passport and you are planning a trip to Australia, you do not need a traditional visa for short stays. What you do need — and must apply for before you board — is an Electronic Travel Authority, known as the ETA subclass 601. It is a digital authorisation, takes a few minutes to apply for, costs AUD 20, and in most cases is approved the same day. This guide covers everything you need to know before you apply.

What the Australia ETA allows

The ETA (subclass 601) permits tourism, family visits, cruises, and short-term business activities such as attending meetings or conferences. It is valid for 12 months from the date of approval — or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. Within that window, you can enter Australia as many times as you like. Each stay is limited to three months.

The ETA does not permit you to work in Australia. It is also not a pathway to longer stays — if you want to be in Australia for more than three months at a stretch, you would need to look at other visa categories. For most Malaysian leisure and business travellers, the 601 is the right and simplest option.

What it costs

There is a service charge of AUD 20 per person. Every traveller — including children — needs their own ETA at the same cost. There are no group or family rates. The fee is non-refundable whether the application is approved or refused, so ensure your details are correct before you submit.

As with the UK ETA, a number of third-party websites offer to process the application for a higher fee. The official application channel is the Australian ETA app — available for free on iOS and Android — or through a registered travel agent who uses the same app on your behalf. There is no faster decision for paying more; the AUD 20 is the only legitimate charge.

How to apply, step by step

Applications must be submitted through the official Australian ETA app — this is the only channel available for subclass 601. You cannot apply through a web browser. Download the app from the Apple App Store or Google Play, then follow these steps:

Scan your passport using your phone's camera. The app reads your details automatically. Take a live selfie for identity verification — this must be done in real time, not from a saved photo. Answer a short series of questions about your travel purpose, health, and character. Pay the AUD 20 service fee by credit card, debit card, Apple Pay, or Google Pay. Submit and wait for confirmation by email or in-app notification.

Most applications are decided immediately or within a few hours. The Australian Department of Home Affairs advises applying at least two to four weeks before you travel, as a small number of cases require additional review and can take longer. One firm rule: do not book non-refundable flights or accommodation until you have your ETA grant in hand.

The passport renewal trap

Your ETA is linked to the specific passport number you used when you applied. If you renew your passport — even if the new one is obtained before your ETA's 12-month window closes — the ETA on your old passport is no longer valid for travel. You will need to apply again using your new passport. This catches people out, particularly Malaysians whose passports are approaching expiry at the time of planning a trip.

When the ETA is not the right option

The ETA is designed for straightforward cases. If you have a criminal conviction — regardless of how minor or how long ago — the automated system will likely refuse the application or flag it for manual review. In those circumstances, the correct path is the Visitor Visa (subclass 600), which allows you to address health and character concerns as part of a more detailed application.

Equally, if you have previously had an Australian visa refused or cancelled, or if you have health concerns that may require a medical examination, a subclass 600 application with supporting documentation gives you a proper avenue to make your case. The subclass 600 takes considerably longer to process — typically four to eight weeks — and costs from AUD 190, but it is the legally correct route for complex situations.

At the Australian border

An approved ETA does not guarantee entry. Border officers at Australian airports can still question you on arrival and may ask to see proof of your return or onward travel, evidence of accommodation bookings, and confirmation that you have enough funds to support your stay. These checks are not unusual for first-time visitors. Carry printed or digital copies of your return flight and accommodation details — it saves time at the gate.

Australia also has strict biosecurity rules at the border. Declare any food, plant material, animal products, or medicines you are carrying. The fines for undeclared items are substantial and enforced without exception. It is not a customs formality — it is taken seriously.

For most Malaysians planning a straightforward trip to Sydney, Melbourne, or the Gold Coast, the ETA is a 10-minute task. Apply early, travel on the same passport, and have your return ticket ready. The country itself — from the Whitsundays to the Blue Mountains to the laneways of Melbourne — will do the rest.
