Northern Vietnam is a different country to the one most people imagine. Sapa sits at 1,500 metres in the Hoang Lien Son mountains — the air is cooler, the landscape is layered terraces and cloud-wrapped ridges, and the hill tribe villages here have been here far longer than the cable cars. Fansipan rises above all of it at 3,143 metres, the highest point in Southeast Asia. Five days is a tight but honest amount of time to cover both Sapa and Hanoi properly, and this departure does it without cutting corners. You fly Malaysia Airlines direct from Kuala Lumpur to Hanoi, then transfer straight to Sapa by road — a 6.5-hour journey through the Red River valley that is scenic enough to make the time pass. Days two and three are spent in the mountains: the mini train to the Fansipan base, the cable car ascent to the summit, Rose Valley, Cat-Cat Village (a working Hmong settlement, not a theme park), and the Ban Mong Alpine Coaster on the way back down through the Sapa countryside. Day four is Hanoi — compact, walkable and loaded with history. The Temple of Literature, founded in 1070, is one of the oldest universities in Asia. Hoa Lo Prison is honest and confronting in equal measure. The Old Quarter and Dong Xuan Market give you the city as it actually runs. Al Noor Mosque is on the itinerary for Friday prayer. You land at Noi Bai International Airport and the day immediately gets going. Your guide meets you at arrivals and the coach heads north for Sapa — a 6.5-hour drive through the Red River valley, climbing through Lao Cai before the road bends west into the mountains. It is a long first day and worth knowing that in advance. The landscape makes up for it: terraced paddies, karst hills, and the air cooling noticeably as you gain altitude.
Noi Bai to Sapa by road — The expressway via Lao Cai is the standard route. A packed halal lunch is provided en route. Toilet stops are built into the journey. Arrive Sapa late afternoon.
