Athens is one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities, but it is not preserved as an archaeological exhibit. Classical ruins, Byzantine churches, Ottoman traces and modern apartment districts occupy the same urban landscape, with the Acropolis providing a constant point of orientation above the centre. The Parthenon was completed in the 5th century BC during the city’s democratic golden age; together with the Erechtheion, Temple of Athena Nike and monumental Propylaea, it formed the sacred centre of ancient Athens. The Acropolis Museum below the hill presents sculptures and architectural fragments in direct visual relationship with the monuments from which they came.
The ancient city extends well beyond the Acropolis. The Agora was the civic and commercial centre where Athenians debated politics, conducted business and worshipped, while the remarkably preserved Temple of Hephaestus overlooks the site. A walking route through Plaka, Anafiotika and Monastiraki connects many of the central remains, including the Roman Agora and Hadrian’s Library. The National Archaeological Museum holds the country’s most important collection of Greek antiquities. For a broader view of the city and the surrounding basin, climb Lycabettus Hill or walk to the Philopappos Monument across from the Acropolis near sunset.
Athens is the principal gateway to mainland Greece and the islands, with direct metro access from the airport and ferries departing from Piraeus, Rafina and Lavrio. Muslim visitors can use the Athens Mosque in Votanikos, while halal dining is most readily found around Omonia, Metaxourgeio and parts of the city centre; seafood and vegetarian Greek dishes add flexibility elsewhere, though ingredients should be confirmed. Spring and early autumn are the best periods for extensive walking. In July and August, plan outdoor archaeological sites early in the morning, reserve museums for the hottest part of the day and allow for occasional heat-related site closures.
Best time to visit
April to June and September to October for warm weather and more comfortable sightseeing; July and August are hot, dry and crowded.
