Greece occupies the southern end of the Balkan Peninsula and includes thousands of islands scattered across the Aegean and Ionian seas. Its geography produces several distinct journeys within one country: the archaeological landscapes of Athens and the Peloponnese, the monasteries and mountains of the mainland, and island groups ranging from the whitewashed Cyclades to the greener Ionian Islands. The legacy of ancient Greece is central — democracy, philosophy, theatre and major traditions of Western art developed here — but the country’s identity was also shaped by Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman rule before the modern Greek state emerged in the 19th century.
Athens is the natural cultural starting point, with the Acropolis, Ancient Agora and the country’s leading archaeological museums. From the capital, Delphi sits beneath Mount Parnassus at what the ancient Greeks considered the centre of the world, while the Peloponnese holds Mycenae, Epidaurus, Olympia and the fortified Byzantine city of Mystras. Farther north, the monasteries of Meteora stand on sandstone pillars above the Thessalian plain. Island travel adds another dimension: Santorini combines volcanic scenery with Bronze Age Akrotiri, Crete pairs major Minoan sites with mountain villages and beaches, and islands such as Naxos, Paros, Rhodes and Corfu each carry a different architectural and historical character.
Greece is straightforward to combine by road, ferry and domestic flight, but island connections vary by season and weather. Strong itineraries avoid collecting too many islands and instead allow time for one or two regions to unfold at a slower pace. Mosques and dedicated halal restaurants are most accessible in Athens and Thessaloniki; choices are limited on many islands and in small towns, where seafood, vegetarian dishes and self-catering provide useful alternatives. Spring and autumn are ideal for archaeology, walking and city travel. July and August offer reliable beach weather, but temperatures can become extreme and famous islands are at their busiest and most expensive.
Best time to visit
April to June and September to October for cultural touring and island travel; July and August are best for beach weather but bring peak heat, crowds and prices.
