Norway stretches from the gentle coast around Oslo to the Arctic edge of Europe, with a landscape carved by glaciers and organised around water. Its fjords are the defining feature: long, steep-sided inlets that carry the sea deep into the mountains. The best-known western fjords — including Geirangerfjord, Nærøyfjord, Sognefjord and Hardangerfjord — are linked by ferries, scenic roads and rail journeys rather than a single conventional touring route. This makes Norway less a destination to rush through than one to experience in stages, allowing the landscape itself to set the pace.
Oslo provides the cultural introduction, with its harbourfront architecture, museums and easy access to forest and fjord. Bergen is the natural gateway to western Norway, while the Flåm Railway descends from the mountain plateau at Myrdal through one of Europe’s steepest and most photographed rail corridors. Farther north, the Lofoten Islands combine fishing villages, sharp granite peaks and sheltered beaches above the Arctic Circle. Tromsø is the principal base for winter Northern Lights journeys and summer travel under the midnight sun. Distances are substantial, so strong itineraries usually combine rail, coastal ferries, road travel and one or two domestic flights.
Norway is easy to navigate independently, safe, English-friendly and exceptionally well organised, but it is also one of Europe’s more expensive destinations. Muslim travellers will find mosques and halal dining most readily in Oslo, Bergen, Trondheim and other larger cities; options become limited in fjord villages and remote northern areas, where advance planning or self-catering is useful. Summer offers the widest access to mountain roads, hiking routes and fjord cruises. Winter is better for snow activities, Arctic landscapes and aurora viewing, with shorter daylight and more weather-dependent travel.
Best time to visit
June to August for fjords, hiking, scenic roads and the midnight sun; September to March for Northern Lights journeys, with December to March best for winter activities.
