Five days on the North Island at your own pace, covering the geological and cultural highlights that make this island unlike anywhere in the southern Pacific. The rental car is collected and returned at Auckland Airport; the route loops south through Waitomo and Hobbiton to Rotorua, then returns north to Auckland on day four. Four activities are included. The day two drive packs in both Waitomo and Hobbiton — 364 kilometres from Auckland to Rotorua with two stops — and an early start is essential. Waitomo is a limestone cave system inhabited by Arachnocampa luminosa, a glowworm species found only in New Zealand; the underground boat cruise through the grotto is the centrepiece. Hobbiton at Matamata is the permanently rebuilt film set from The Hobbit trilogy, with the Signature Tour including lunch at the Party Marquee. Rotorua gets a full day on day three. Wai-O-Tapu in the morning — position for the Lady Knox Geyser at 10:15am before the main park circuit — and the Redwoods Nightlights in the evening: an elevated treetop walkway through the Whakarewarewa Forest lit by artist-designed lanterns at dusk. The drive back to Auckland on day four is 228 kilometres; the morning is free in Rotorua before departure. This is a tour for you if you want the North Island's geological and cultural core covered in under a week, driving yourself at your own pace.

Day-by-Day
Collect your rental car at Auckland Airport and drive to your accommodation in the city. The car is included for 4 days with zero or reduced excess liability — confirm the specific excess terms at collection. Auckland Airport is 21 kilometres south of the city centre; allow 30–45 minutes depending on traffic.
Auckland sits on an isthmus between the Waitematā and Manukau harbours, with volcanic cones visible from most elevated points — remnants of 53 separate eruption sites on a field that is dormant rather than extinct. The waterfront from Viaduct Harbour to the ferry terminal is an easy evening walk.
Optional: Sky Tower observation deck at 186 metres (own expense); Waiheke Island Hop-On Hop-Off Explorer Bus — the ferry to Waiheke and a circuit of the island's vineyards and beaches (own expense); Auckland Harbour Sailing (own expense).
